New This Year!
San Antonio 2008!
December 2007

Dear Mike,

One more month left of 2007, and here are your updates/corrections/additions for December.

Don't forget to buy next year's calendar if you haven't already! New 2008 calendars for Austin and San Antonio are available at www.bigweekendcalendars.com.

They all sold out before Christmas last year, so why not buy yours now? ;)  The calendars make great gifts for co-workers, friends, family and pets.

Trail of Lights Events

For those of you with the 2007 calendar we had a goof on the Trail of lights. Here's all the correct info:

The holiday season officially began Sunday night with the lighting of the Zilker Park tree. Next on the events list is the Trail of Lights 5K Run, next Saturday, Dec. 8, at 6:30pm. The 5K is the premiere of the Trail of Lights, which is only viewable to registered runners. Registration information is here. The Trail of Lights opens to the public on Sunday, Dec. 9, with a parade and ribbon-cutting ceremony, and goes on through Dec. 23, from 7 to 10pm every night. (Note: the 2007 calendar shows the Trail of Lights on Dec. 2-23, but it really begins on Dec. 9.) And after the food and torn wrapping paper is put away, remember to recycle your Christmas tree at Zilker Park beginning Saturday, Dec. 29. Whew! All Trail of Lights information is at www.ci.austin.tx.us/tol/default.htm.
Armadillo Christmas Bazaar

The 32nd annual Armadillo Christmas Bazaar runs Dec. 14-24 (not Dec. 13-24), 11am-11pm daily, and this year, since the Austin Music Hall is still undergoing renovations, the bazaar makes its home in the Austin Convention Center, Exhibit Hall 2. Featuring local artists and musicians - everyone from Ray Benson and JimmyLa Fave to Ruthie Foster and Marcia Ball - the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar is a favorite institution that's keeping the holidays weird. See  www.armadillobazaar.com for music schedule, artist information and anything else you need.
Blue Genie Art Bazaar

We'll be there!

As if the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar weren't enough, the Blue Genie Art Bazaar moves from the Blue Genie headquarters off of Springdale to the brand-spankin'-new Monarch Events Center in Lincoln Village (across from Highland Mall). This bazaar runs Dec. 5-24 with more than 80 arts & crafters. The center is open Sunday-Thursday, 10am-10pm; Friday-Saturday, 10am-12mid; and even Christmas Eve, 10am-6pm, for all you last-minute shoppers. Plus, it's all FREE! See www.bluegenieart.com for artist info, maps and more, and be sure to stop by and say hello!

Jingle Bell Ride
The annual bike ride through Downtown has been downsized due to its extreme popularity. This year, the Austin Ridge Riders host a bikes-only ride through the Trail of Lights on Sunday, Dec. 16, starting promptly at 6pm. Strap in the kids, and get there early.

Christmas on 37th Street

It might not be the epileptic extravaganza it once was, but the longtime neighbors of 37th Street (just east of Guadalupe) aren't about to put away the lights. For the best viewing pleasure, park away from the street and stroll through the lit-up ovens, alien-themed front yards and light-strewn power lines. It's a Christmas tradition.

But Wait ... There's More
Austinites love their celebrations, and while you can't through a hackysack without hitting a new party, tradition or idea, there are some things that remain constant. Ballet Austin celebrates its 45th year of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker through Dec. 23. Martin Burke reprises his role as Crumpet the Macy's elf in David Sedaris' wildly successful The Santaland Diaries at Zach Scott Theatre through Jan. 6, 2008. And lastly, the Austin Symphony jumps from Handel's "Messiah" this Tuesday, Dec. 4, to a family-friendly Christmas Sing-Along on Dec. 11.
