The Best Weird Things To Do In Austin

I’ve been in Austin for over 20 years and while the “weird” Austin has been increasingly eclipsed by the “new” Austin, I still love finding the strange and unique in our wonderful city.

I have a blog separate from the calendar business where I curate a fantastic list of over one hundred Weird Austin Things To Do. I thought I’d share some of those ideas here. Many of them are in the calendar, some are not. If you know of anything that we might want to include, just contact me. I’d love to hear from you!

Here’s the list, in no particular order.

Top 10 Weird Things To Do In Austin

  1. The Eureka Room

This is mysterious place is hard to describe but well-loved and filled with some serious absurdity.

  2. The Stuffed Animal Rescue Foundation

The process of adopting a Stuffed Animal from this organization (“SA” in their parlance) is far more competitive than you would ever imagine.

  3. The Museum of Natural and Artificial Emphemerata

A home museum of randomness, invention, and collections you never imagined existed.

  4. The Cathedral of Junk

It’s as amazing as you’ve heard, and then some. Just a regular house in South Austin… with a massive pile of junk formed into a two-story explorable “cathedral”.

  5. The Austin Bike Zoo

Fantastic, charming, and inventive, these bikes are shaped like animals and if you’re lucky enough to find them then you might be lucky enough to get to ride one.

  6. Me Mer Mo

This is the weirdest weekly music show in Austin, hands down. Avant garde is not even close of a way to describe the mind-blowingly strange and bizarre sounds and spectacles you’ll experience here.

  7. The 37th Street Lights

Not your usual holiday lights in the neighborhood display. Chaos, mayhem, and non-holiday themes rule at this recently brought-back-from-the-dead Austin tradition.

  8. Fusebox Festival

A performance art festival featuring performers from around the world doing things I couldn’t begin to describe in venues are varied as “someone’s car” and The Moody Theater. Bonus: it is FREE as in free spirit.

  9. Austin Weird Homes Tour

One of my favorite tours. The name says it all. Satisfy your curiosity about that weird house you pass on your way to HEB.

  10. Party World Rasslin

Professional wresting from a vast parallel and strange universe where anyone or anything can wrestle anyone or anything, be it animal, vegetable, mineral, concept or thought. Free to the public and a labor of love to the many many people who put on this elaborate show every few months.

  11. Collection Rert

A home and gallery created by two gracious and generous artists who provide “uncommon cultural experiences and providing opportunities for artists to experiment.” See their website for shows.
